HEALTH AND WELLNESSWhat Americans are most stressed about24/7 Wall StreetIn recent months, political strife, violence and the lingering economic downturn have only made things worse. On behalf of the American Psychological Association (APA), The Harris Poll surveyed more than 3,000 adults living in the U.S. in late spring of 2020 and another 2,000-plus in the latter part of January this year, asking them which aspects of the COVID-19 crisis and of other more general social and political factors caused them the most stress. The surveys returned results for total respondents but also broke some issues down by race, political party, and parental status. Overall, what stressed people the most were two things: the pandemic itself (80% of respondents) and the future of our nation (81%).Stephen Maturen / Getty ImagesThe future of our nation> Respondents: All those surveryed> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 81% (2021)Hydromet / IStock Via Getty ImagesPolitical unrest around the nation> Respondents: All those surveryed> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 74% (2021)Tasos Katopodis / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesThe current political climate> Respondents: All those surveryed> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 74% (2021)David Ryder / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesThe breach of the U.S. Capitol on January 6> Respondents: All those surveryed> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 66% (2021)Samuel Corum / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesThe economy> Respondents: All those surveryed> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 70%Stephanie Keith / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesPolice violence towards minorities> Respondents: All those surveryed> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 71%Joe Raedle / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesRacial discrimination> Respondents: Black Americans> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 55%Megan Varner / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesThe coronavirus pandemic> Respondents: All those surveryed> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 80% (2021)John Moore / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesGovernment response to COVID-19> Respondents: All those surveryed> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 67%Pool / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesA family member getting coronavirus> Respondents: Parents> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 74% (2021)Al Bello / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesGetting coronavirus oneself> Respondents: Parents> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 73%Mario Tama / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesGetting coronavirus oneself> Respondents: People of color> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 71%Mario Tama / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesGetting coronavirus oneself> Respondents:White adults> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 59%Demaerre / Getty ImagesBeing around others when they don’t take preventive measures> Respondents: Democrats> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 87%Jon Cherry / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesAccess to health care services> Respondents: Parents> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 66%Spencer Platt / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesAccess to health care services> Respondents: People of color> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 59%Lisa Maree Williams / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesAccess to health care services> Respondents: White adults> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 46%Lisa Maree Williams / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesAvailability of and access to food, housing, and other basic needs> Respondents: Parents> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 70%Spencer Platt / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesAvailability of and access to food, housing, and other basic needs> Respondents: People of color> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 61%Mario Tama / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesAvailability of and access to food, housing, and other basic needs> Respondents: White adults> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 47%Mario Tama / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesManaging remote or online learning for one’s children> Respondents: Parents> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 71%Scott Olson / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesDisrupted routines or adjusting to new ones> Respondents: Parents> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 74%Mario Tama / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesThe impact the pandemic has had on one’s children’s social development> Respondents: Parents> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 71%Tomohiro Ohsumi / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesMissing out on major milestones> Respondents: Parents> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 63%Scott Olson / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesSelf-isolation> Respondents: Parents> Percentage of respondents significantly stressed: 67%John Moore / Getty Images News Via Getty ImagesFeatured Weekly Ad
