Paulson elaborated on why she used her speech to encourage others to donate to the ACLU: "If this had been any other year and any other time and this very extraordinary thing happened to me, and I had a whole speech planned to my very first acting teacher, to the casting director who gave me my first job, it just didn't feel like the right tone. I mean, even just putting on the dress and putting on the diamonds and all of it, something about it when you think about the people at JFK and LAX and airports across the country, and it just starts to feel all a little bit silly," she said.

Bryan Cranston, a winner for his role in 'All the Way,'  talked about focusing on the positive. "There’s a lot of strife in the world and our country, but it’s important to embrace the good things we have as well. This collective of creative people coming together," he said.
