To the surprise of many, the Los Angeles Lakers hired Mike D'Antoni to be their next head coach late Sunday. Here's a look back at D'Antoni's career in the NBA.

In his first NBA head coaching job, D'Antoni went 14-36 with the Denver Nuggets in the lockout-shortened 1988-99 season,

D'Antoni took over as head coach of the Suns early in the 2003-04 season, replacing Frank Johnson after the team started the season 8-13.

D'Antoni was named the NBA Coach of the Year for the 2004-2005 season, during which the Suns won 62 games and lost to the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals.

In Los Angeles, D'Antoni will be reunited with point guard Steve Nash. D'Antoni coached Nash for four seasons with the Phoenix Suns.

Despite winning at least 54 games every season after his first with the team, D'Antoni never led the Suns past the Western Conference Finals.

Mike D'Antoni agreed to be the New York Knicks' new head coach in 2008, working under new general manager Donnie Walsh.

Despite lofty expecations, D'Antoni never won a playoff game in three-plus seasons with the Knicks.
