Bathtub gin, speakeasy culture and flapper chic take center stage at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia with today's opening of American Spirits: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition.

Billed as the first-ever comprehensive exhibit on the topic, it traces the rise of the temperance movement, which culminated in the 18th Amendment banning alcohol, and ended with passage of the 21st Amendment, which re-opened the taps and got the liquor flowing again. .

American Spirits was created by the Constitution Center and was curated by Daniel Okrent, author of Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition.

After its Philadelphia run, the exhibit will travel to St. Paul, Minn.; St. Louis; Austin; Seattle; and Grand Rapids, Mich., over the next three years.
