World's first toilet theme park makes a splash

Laura S. Bly, USA TODAY
World's first toilet theme park makes a splash: Visitors pose in front of "Mr. Toilet House," the star attraction of South Korea's new Restroom Cultural Park. It was built by the former mayor of Suwon, who was born in a toilet and founded the World Toilet Association.

We've heard of some offbeat themes for amusement parks — Angry Birds and Napoleon among them . But get a load of this: South Korea's delicately named Restroom Cultural Park, which opened near the southern city of Suwon earlier this year, is dedicated to the loo.

It's the brainchild of the late Sim Jae-Duck, a.k.a. "Mr. Toilet," who was reportedly born in his grandmother's bathroom and whose own toilet-shaped abode is now a museum at the heart of the park. The founder of the World Toilet Association (and former Suwon mayor) led a campaign to improve public sanitation in the 1980s, and his efforts were so successful that the city holds a monthly Cleanest Public Restroom Contest to showcase local businesses.

At the Restroom Cultural Park, meanwhile, visitors can stroll through a toilet-themed art gallery and sculpture garden, inspect WC signs from across the globe — and, yes, buy a few crappy souvenirs.
