Are you less happy to stay with in-laws than your clan?

USATODAY
Thanksgiving dinners gather the family around the table. So how long should out-of-town family members stay at each others' homes?
A new survey says less than a week is ideal.

How long is "too long" to stay with your family over the holidays? What about with your in-laws?

Both questions were included in a just-released survey from Extended Stay America. The lodging chain queried more than 4,000 past guests on the subject of holiday visiting.

So how long is too long to stay with family?

One to three nights, say 21.3% of respondents. Top choice: four to six nights is too long, say 36.4%.

But there are some really family-oriented folk out there. For 24.5%, more than a week was too long, and 17.7% said "it's never too long."

When it comes to in-laws, answers are a bit different.

Nearly half (42.6%) are ready to pack up and leave after one to three nights. The four/six option was picked by 27.5%. More than a week took 16.3% of the vote. And 13.7% said it's never too long.

What is the most challenging thing about staying with relatives?

Showering/bathroom scheduling ( 59%) bested "over-inquisitive relatives," which was picked by 24.9%.

And yes, more than 70% at some point wished they were not staying with family — maybe after Uncle Steve got soused again or following the umpteenth "When are we going to have a grandchild?" inquisition.

On a more practical note, half of respondents planned to spend less than $500 on holiday travel this year. Whether because of the economy, or a desire to stay close to the place where one is king or queen of one's own castle, they didn't say.
