Nissan recalls Altimas for faulty steering bolts

Nissan is recalling 13,919 new and near-new Altima sedans because some bolts may not be tight enough, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says today.

The error in the 2012 and 2013 Altimas could have serious consequences. If the nuts loosen and fall off, the vehicle could veer out of control and crash, NHTSA warns in the recall notice.

The bolts are used to lock down the traverse link and the power-steering rack. They were supposed to have been tightened to a specific torque specification, but apparently, some were not.

Nissan is going to send a notice to owners to bring in their cars so that mechanics can check to make sure the bolts were tightened to the correct specification.
