Drive On: EPA reviewing Ford's gas mileage claims

Consumer Reports' findings that two Ford hybrids don't have the fuel economy they claim has aroused interest from the Environmental Protection Agency, which now plans a review, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The EPA confirmed it's taking a close look at the consumer magazine's findings, but declined further comment. The magazine said last week that its tests showed the Ford Fusion sedan and C-Max small crossover hybrids showed the worst mileage discrepancies between their EPA ratings and real-world testing of any models tested this year.

Ford says Fusion and C-Max both get 47 miles a gallon in the city, on the highway and combined. The 47/47/47 figures have been used prominently in advertising.

In CR's testing, Fusion hybrid got 35 mpg in the city, 41 on the highway and 39 mpg overall in 2,000 miles of driving. C-Max got 35 mpg in the city, 38 on the highway and 37 mpg overall.
