Arnold Schwarzenegger marches on with book tour

USATODAY
Arnold Schwarzenegger smiles on the streets of NYC on Monday.

Is Arnold Schwarzenegger's book tour helping or hurting his image?

Gawker isn't impressed.

And Star Jones isn't buying it. She tweeted this morning: "#Arnold Schwarzenegger fake rebranding apology book tour irritates me. 'just 'cause you pour syrup on something, doesn't make it pancakes!' "

Joy Behar cracked: "I give Arnold Schwarzenegger credit. He got through the entire "60 Minutes" interview without groping Lesley Stahl."

And Steve Martin tweeted: "I just read Arnold Schwarzenegger's autobiography and was shocked. I would NEVER cheat on my maid."

L.A. Times opinion writer Carla Hall says she was "disappointed" by his "performance" on 60 Minutes. He had an "opportunity to offer contrition for his sins" and didn't do it.

Ian Halperin, author of unauthorized 2010 bio The Governator, calls it all a "calculated" move, focusing on what has already come out.

Meanwhile, Arnold is merrily Instagramming from his book signings, looking no worse for the wear.

And Monday night he stopped by The Daily Show with Jon Stewart for a partly funny, mostly serious chat.

Stewart started off by picking up Arnold's book, Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story, and asking the question, "So listen, we gotta get the elephant out of the room. Obviously, what everybody's thinking about when they look at this is, what were you thinking with Jingle All the Way?"

Arnold, 65, acknowledged the "mistake" he made, referring to his affair with the housekeeper. "Those questions will come up. You can't run away from those kinds of things."

Stewart cracked to the Terminator star, "Couldn't you just go to the future and then come back and kill that Arnold?"
