Martin Landau joins Lifetime 'Anna Nicole Smith' movie

USATODAY
Martin Landau arrives at Disney's 'Frankenweenie' premiere at the El Capitan Theatre on Sept. 24 in Hollywood.

Lifetime's new take on Anna Nicole Smith is shaping up.

Private Practice star Agnes Bruckner has been cast in the lead role of the original movie, executive produced by Craig Zadan, Neil Meron and Judith Verno, Deadline reports. Virginia Madsen will play Smith's mom. American Psycho's Mary Harron has signed on to direct.

The Anna Nicole Smith Story is, of course, based on the story of Vicky Lynn Hogan, who transformed herself from small-town Texas girl to Marilyn Monroe-esque Playboy pin-up and model, all to have it end in tragedy.

Today, Martin Landau's reps confirmed to Lifeline Live that he will portray oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall, the millionaire whom Smith married and was 62 years her senior.

He'll start work on the Smith Story next week. First, Landau, 84, will be honored in London on Tuesday by the British Film Institute with an evening tribute to his noted career of film and television roles. He also will be in England to participate in Disney's international promotional launch of Tim Burton's Frankenweenie, for which he is one of the principal voice actors. He plans to attend the film's international premiere on Wednesday.

Smith died in 2007 at the age of 39, after a drug overdose. She has been the subject of a biographical film before. In 2009, The Anna Nicole Smith Story starred Willa Ford as the sexy reality star.
