American Music Awards announced

Christina Aguilera announces nominations for the 2012 American Music Awards.

The American Music Awards, celebrating its 40th anniversary, were announced today in Los Angeles by singer Christina Aguilera, who will perform on the live broadcast on Nov. 18 on ABC.

According to the official press release, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna lead this year with four nominations each. Drake, Justin Bieber, Maroon 5, One Direction and Usher follow with three nominations each, and Carrie Underwood, Chris Brown, fun., Gotye, J.Cole, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Luke Bryan and Pitbull collected two nominations respectively.

This year's 2012 Artist of the Year nominees are Bieber, Drake, Maroon 5, Perry and Rihanna. New Artist of the Year nominees are J. Cole, fun, Gotye, Carly Rae Jepsen and One Direction.

There's also a new category this year, Electronic Dance Music, with nominees including David Guetta, Calvin Harris and Skrillex.

For the sixth year, winners will be determined by online voting starting today.
