'LGBTQ State of the Union': Billy Porter goes after Trump hours before president's speech

Donald Trump didn't give the first State of the Union speech on Tuesday.

Hours before the president's televised address began, "Pose" star Billy Porter gave a speech of his own: an "LGBTQ State of the Union," published on Logo's YouTube and social media channels.

In his speech, Porter criticized the president and called out discrimination against LGBTQ people.

"Our nation is facing one of the biggest crises of my lifetime," Porter said. "So far our nation has survived the first term of Donald Trump, but who's to say what another term would do to this country, to democracy and, truly, to the entire world?"

According to Porter, Trump "has painted himself as a friend to the LGBTQ community," but has revealed "his true colors at every malicious turn." In his speech, Porter took issue with multiple Trump policies, including his ban on transgender people from serving in the military.

Porter also called out violent hate crimes against transgender people. According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 26 transgender people were murdered in the U.S. in 2019.

"This heinous violence against trans people, which disproportionately affects trans women of color, is nothing short of an epidemic," he added.

In addition to "heartbreaking setbacks," Porter also acknowledged "triumphant victories" for the community, including Utah becoming the 19th state to outlaw conversion therapy and "increasingly rich and diverse representation on television and in film."

Porter ended his speech with a call for compassion.

"Every act of kindness is a blow against cruelty," he said. "Every act of empathy is a blow against bigotry. Every act of courage is a blow against cowardly self-interest. And every act of love is a blow against hate."
