Grand jury indicts suspect in killing of actor Eddie Hassell

— A grand jury has indicted an 18-year-old on a capital murder charge in the killing of actor Eddie Hassell during a carjacking in suburban Dallas.

D’Jon Antone, who lives in Dallas, was indicted Wednesday, Anna Tinsley Williams, the Communications Officer for Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office, confirmed to USA TODAY Friday.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram and The Dallas Morning News report that Antone was arrested in November, just days after Hassell was fatally shot in Grand Prairie, Texas.

USA TODAY has reached out to the Grand Prairie Police Department for comment.

Hassell, who was born in Corsicana, Texas, was known for his roles in the NBC show “Surface” and the 2010 film “The Kids Are All Right.” Hassell was living in Waco but had been staying with a woman at an apartment in Grand Prairie, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

According to surveillance video and witness interviews, Hassell had left the apartment to go to the woman’s car.

At the time, Grand Prairie police officers responded to a report of the shooting around 1:50 a.m., according to Public Information Officer Chelsea Kretz. They found Hassell suffering from apparent gunshot wounds and transported him to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Kretz said the motive was under investigation, but detectives confirmed a car was taken from the scene and later recovered.

Detectives have now determined Antone shot Hassell and stole the car.

Hassell played Clay in "Kids," which starred Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo, and Phil in the sci-fi series "Surface," alongside Lake Bell and Leighton Meester.

Some stars took to social media to mourn the loss of Hassell at the time of his death.

"Rest In Peace, Eddie," Ruffalo tweeted Monday after hearing the news. "More senseless gun violence. It’s a plague on our nation. This should not be our reality."

According to IMDb, Hassell's most recent role was as a waiter in the 2017 film "Oh Lucy!"
