Joe Alwyn on 'accidental' Taylor Swift collaboration on 'Exile,' engagement rumors

If you're wondering about Joe Alwyn and Taylor Swift's status of engagement, you may never get an answer.

The "Conversations With Friends" star, 31, discussed (or rather didn't) engagement rumors in an interview with Vulture.

"The truth is … if I had a pound coin for every time someone told me I’ve been engaged or I’m getting engaged, I would have a lot of pound coins," Alwyn said. 

He also made it clear: "If the answer was yes, I wouldn’t say. If the answer is no, I wouldn’t say," the same verbatim diplomatic answer he gave WSJ Magazine in April.

Although the actor won't talk about his romantic life with Swift, he did give a crumb to Swifties and discussed collaborating with the singer on two songs from her "Folklore" album.

Alwyn, who plays piano and guitar, told Vulture that he was "messing around" on the keys and singing what would become the first verse of "Exile" when Swift, 32, entered the room. 

"She said, 'Can we try and sit down and get to the end together?' And so we did. It was as basic as some people made sourdough," he recalled.

The actor added: "It was completely off the cuff, an accident."

Alwyn's voice is not on the track as Bon Iver's Justin Vernon handled the vocals in the final version. "Sending it to Justin with the idea of doing a duet and getting voice notes back of him singing over the top and stuff was surreal," Alwyn told GQ Hype. "It was a perk of lockdown."

"It was fun to do it together, and I was proud of it. It was nice getting such a positive reception," he said of working with Swift and Bon Iver.

The British star also came up with the chorus of Swift's hit "Betty" on the same album.

"I’d probably had a drink and was just stumbling around the house. We couldn’t decide on a film to watch that night, and she was like, ‘Do you want to try and finish writing that song you were singing earlier?’ And so we got a guitar and did that," Alwyn shared with Vulture. 

Should fans expect more Alwyn and Swift collaborations? The actor told GQ Hype that it's unlikely.

"It was fun to do it together, and I was proud of it. It was nice getting such a positive reception," he said.

Alwyn has rarely discussed his relationship with Swift. 

In February, the British actor discussed the relationship drama in "Conversations With Friends" at Hulu's Television Critics Association press panel and how art does not imitate life when it comes to his character Nick.

Alwyn made it clear that open relationships are fine for others, but not for him.

"People can do whatever they want that makes them happy," said Alwyn. "I'm obviously happy in a monogamous relationship," but open relationships "seem exhausting."

Jemima Kirke ("Girls") stars as Nick's wife Melissa, who's involved in her own extramarital relationship in "Conversations with Friends." Kirke said having an open relationship would be all-consuming, requiring "so much talking with your spouse, maybe on a weekly basis, on what's OK and what's not OK."
