Taylor Swift reveals it took her 5 days to write, record and release 'Christmas Tree Farm'

Remember when Taylor Swift surprised fans at the beginning of December with a Christmas song? The entire process took the pop star less than a week.

In a behind-the-scenes video shared Monday, Swift revealed that she first pitched the idea for the holiday jam on Dec. 1

"So the idea I have for the song is 'Christmas Tree Farm,' 'cause I grew up on one," Swift begins a phone-recorded video. "It's about how, like, you're in the city and you're stressed out and your life is feeling really low, but in your heart is a Christmas tree farm," she added with a laugh.

Taylor Swift surprised fans on Dec. 6 with a new nostalgia-inspired song for the holidays: "Christmas Tree Farm."

The next day, Swift headed into the studio with co-producer Jimmy Napes, who has worked on Sam Smith's hits "Stay With Me," "I'm Not the Only One" and "Too Good at Goodbyes."

She recorded the song later in the day on Dec. 2 before watching back-up vocalists record their parts in studio on a different day.

Swift surprised fans with her Christmas song release earlier in December: Just months before, she released her seventh studio album, "Lover," so her listeners weren't expecting any new music.

Plus, artists typically release their jolly tunes in November, so they have enough time gain traction before the holidays begin. When Swift first revealed the song to fans, she acknowledged the quick turnaround but said she didn't want to sit on the song until the 2020 holiday season.

"OK, I know this is pretty wild but I've just written a Christmas song. I feel like it's weird to just wait a year to put it out," Swift said in a video posted Dec. 5 ahead of the song's midnight release.

She dropped a music video at the same time: A nostalgia-filled collection of clips of a young Swift at home in Pennsylvania for the holidays – where else?– on her family's Christmas tree farm.
