West Virginia, Baylor have record-setting scoring day

A basketball game. An intense matchup of NCAA Football 13. A glorified 7-on-7 scrimmage.

Any of those would be an accurate description of what we witnessed between West Virginia and Baylor.

After almost four hours and more than 1,500 yards, the Mountaineers prevailed 70-63 in their first conference game as a member of the Big 12.

Here are some of the more ridiculous stats:

  • Geno Smith added to his already-amazing September. The West Virginia quarterback finished 45-for-51 for 656 yards and eight touchdowns. That's right, eight touchdowns. Two more than his incompletions for the game.

  • Five of those scoring passes went to Stedman Bailey, who had 13 catches for 303 yards. Those numbers make fellow receiver Tavon Austin's 14 catches for 215 yards and one touchdown look miniscule.

  • Baylor quarterback Nick Florence completed 29 of 47 passes for 581 yards and five touchdowns.

  • Smith and Florence both set school records for most passing yards in a game.

  • His favorite target was Terrence Williams, who also broke the 300-yard barrier with 17 catches for 314 yards and two scores. The 314 yards are a Big 12 record for reception yardage. Whose record did he break? Bailey's, who set the record earlier in the game.

  • Total yardage in the game was an astronomic 1,507. However, it did not surpass the 1,640 yards accumulated by San Jose State and Nevada in 2001.

  • The 133 points fell three short of the Football Bowl Subdivision record for points in regulation, set in Navy's 74-62 win vs. North Texas in 2007. But they topped all of the Final Four games from last season.

  • There were 19 total touchdowns, which equaled the FBS record set on two other occasions.

  • West Virginia equaled its 70 points in its Orange Bowl defeat of Clemson in January.

  • Baylor tied a FBS record by scoring 63 points and losing in regulation. Rice in 2004 and Toledo in 2011 also hold the mark.

The first half ended with the game tied at 35 and the teams combining for 711 yards of total offense -- 338 for Baylor and 373 for West Virginia.

The 70 points were six shy of the FBS record for a half set by Houston and Tulsa in 1968.

Florence was 11 of 16 for 296 yards and two touchdowns.

Smith completed 26 of 28 passes for 288 yards and four touchdowns, including a 47-yarder to Bailey.

How fast were points flying in the first 30 minutes?

No touchdown drive -- and there were 10 of them -- took longer than 3:40, and only two took longer than two minutes.

The score was 14-14 before the teams combined for 42 points in the final nine minutes of the half, including a 67-yard touchdown from Florence to Lanear Sampson on the last play of the half.

The only people more exhausted than the defenses chasing the Bears and the Mountaineers might have been the scorekeepers trying to keep up.
