Updates: USA leads 10-6 after Day 2

Joe Fleming, USA TODAY Sports
Tiger Woods tees off at No. 1 in the Saturday afternoon fourball session.

The USA went 3-1 in the morning, led by the powerhouse team of Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley, and will take a 10-6 lead into the Sunday singles matches at the 39th Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club.

The Europeans got solid performances in the afternoon from Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald, who defeated Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker 1-up, keeping the American duo scoreless this week.

World No. 1 Rory McIlroy and Ryder Cup machine Ian Poulter rallied in the final six holes to defeat Zach Johnson and Jason Dufner to earn the second point in the afternoon for Europe.

Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar and Webb Simpson and Bubba Watson earned full points for the USA in the afternoon.

Mickelson and Bradley defeated Donald and Lee Westwood 7 and 6, Dufner and Zach Johnson defeated Garcia and Nicolas Colsaerts 2 and 1 and Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker held off McIlroy and Graeme McDowell 1-up. Europe grabbed a point when the leadoff men, Poulter and Justin Rose, held on to beat Simpson and Watson 1-up.

Game On! will be looking in all day.

Take a look back at Day 1. Follow along with in-progress scoring.

NBC has the broadcast.

7:32: Woods and Stricker go 0-for-3, despite a strong comeback, falling to Garcia/Donald 1-up. Stricker and Woods both missed birdies on the 18th that would have secured a half point.

7:24: Poulter does it again, with a birdie at 17. The guy has been money in Ryder Cup play, no question. Zach Johnson knocks in his birdie, too, so this one will go to 18 with the Euros leading 1 up.

7:15: Woods/Stricker go to 18 trailing by one to Garcia/Donald. And Poulter strikes again, at 16, carrying the Poulter/McIlroy team to a 1-up lead on Zach Johnson/Dufner headed to 17.

7:02: Donald and Garcia will see Tiger's tee shot, and they answer, Garcia to about 12 feet, and Donald inside Tiger to about 3 feet. Whoa.

7:00: A Woods birdie at 16 gets Woods/Stricker to within one again of Garcia/Donald. On 17, Tiger sticks his tee shot to within 6 feet for birdie. Whoa.

6:55: Dustin Johnson/Kuchar secure a 1-up victory against Lawrie/Cosaerts, and the USA now has 10 points for sure. 10-4 at the moment. with two matches on the course.

McIlroy/Poulter are all square with Zach Johnson/Dufner (following Poulter's birdie on 15), and Donald/Garcia leading Woods/Stricker 2 up on the 16th hole.

6:35: Donald stops the Woods/Stricker momentum with a birdie on 15, even though all four players missed the green. Now Donald/Garcia are 2 up with three to play.

Dustin Johnson drains a birdie putt on 17 to get the 1 up lead back for him and Kuchar against Colsaerts and Lawrie.

6:10: McIlroy energizes the European side with a sparkling birdie on 13 to win the hole and get himself and Poulter to within one of Zach Johnson/Dufner.

6:00: President Bush, W, and Michael Jordan got a good look at the tee shots on 13. McIlroy's was best, and he'll have a really good look at birdie. Dufner and Zach Johnson will have birdie putts, too. Poulter pulled his tee shot left and will have awkward stance above the bunker.

5:50: Getting very interesting now. Tiger sticks his tee shot on the par-3 13th to about 3 feet, makes the birdie, and he and Stricker have won three of the last four and are now only 1 down to Donald/Garcia.

Dustin Johnson/Kuchar remain 1-up on Colsaerts/Lawrie through 14.

McIlroy bungles his birdie chance on 12, and Zach Johnson/Dufner have a chance to stay 2 up.

5:30: Watson and Simpson make birdie at No. 14 (thanks to Bubba), and Rose/Molinari cannot match it, and this one is over 5 and 4. The USA guarantees itself a lead going into the final day, and now leads overall 9-4.

And Stricker and Woods get to 2 down with six to play on a birdie by Stricker. Perhaps not dead yet.

5:25: The Europeans are running out of holes ... as are Woods and Stricker. Woods missed a birdie putt on 11 that would have gotten the Americans to within two.

Paul Lawrie saves par at 13 to keep himself and Colsaerts only 1 down against Kuchar/Dustin Johnson.

Watson/Simpson can close out Rose/Molinari if they win the 14th hole to take a 5-up lead.

And Zach Johnson/Dufner still 2 up on Poulter/McIlroy through 10.

5:00: Webb Simpson and Bubba Watson are keeping the pressure on, 3-up against Rose/Molinari through 12. Dustin Johnson and Kuchar are 1-up against Colsaerts and Lawrie through 11. And Zach Johnson/Dufner lead McIlroy/Poulter 2-up through 9.

Woods and Stricker are dying out there, 4 down through 9 to Garcia/Donald. Woods had an eagle chance at 10 but couldn't get it down. But his conceded par will be enough to get one back. 3 down through 10. They are going to need a lot more of that.

4:30: Stricker and Woods are making a mess of things again. They are 3 down through 8.

McIlroy and Poulter each had birdie putts at 8 to get back to within one, but they couldn't do it. Dufner/Zach Johnson are 2 up.

4:06: Woods and Stricker can't cut into the Donald/Garcia 2 up lead at No. 7. USA leads in two, the other is all square.

3:41: The USA still leads in two matches ... 2 up for Simpson/Watson, 1 up for Dufner/Zach Johnson, but Colsaerts and Lawrie have evened things up with Kuchr/Dustin Johnson.

Colsaerts makes birdie on the par-5 seventh to square it up.

Garcia/Donald still lead Woods/Stricker 2 up.

3:15: The first signs of life today for Stricker/Woods. Each had an eagle putt at No. 5: Tiger's came up short, Stricker's found the center of the cup. They get one back and are 2 down. Also some signs of life for McIlroy and Poulter. Poulter drains a birdie at 4 and cut the Zach Johnson/Jason Dufner lead to one.Long way to go here.

3:00: The failures continue for Woods/Stricker, who lose the fourth hole to fall 3 down to Garcia/Donald. Great birdie from Garcia.

The USA does lead in the other three matches.

2:35: The USA leads in three of the four matches, including Dufner/Zach Johnson 2-up through 2 against McIlroy and Poulter. The only U.S. team not leading? Well, of course, Woods/Stricker, who are hacking it around again out there. They were 2 down through 2, and lucky to be there.

Dustin Johnson/Matt Kuchar are 1 up through 3 on Colsaerts/Lawre, and Simpson/Watson are 1 up through 4 on Rose/Molinari.

Presidents Bush and Bush, 41 and 43, are both on the scene.

2:05: Tiger is on the course ... and he hits a beautiful third. Unfortunately, he was behind the green at 1 and will be lucky to escape with par. Garcia meanwhile, has 3 feet for birdie, conceded, to give Europe a 1-up lead.

On No. 2, Kuchar drains a bomb to give the USA a 1-up lead vs. Lawrie/Colsaerts.

1:45: The afternoon fourball session has begun, and Webb Simpson/Bubba Watson are all square with Justin Rose and Francesco Molinari through one hole.

1:16: After a booming McIlroy drive, McDowell tugs the approach just a touch, landing it left and long in the fringe on the 18th green. Furyk, out of a fairway bunker (where Snedeker left him) was right on target but just a bit short ... still in good position to earn a halve of the hole and a full point.

McIlroy could not make any magic from the fringe, leaving the USA two putts to win the match. Snedeker gets within 3 feet, and McIlroy and McDowell concede. The big European team of Mc and Mc is 1-2 now

USA leads 8-4 after the Saturday morning session. Afternoon fourballs to come.

12:55: The Ryder Cup giveth, and the Ryder Cup taketh away. Moments after Garcia's chip-in to get within one of Dufner/Johnson, Colsaerts hits a 6-iron into the water at 17.

Dufner was safely on the green off the tee. Johnson sent his putt up snug for a conceded par, and he and Dufner win the match 2 and 1.

The USA now leads 7-4, with one match left.

Meanwhile, a huge drive from McIlroy and brilliant approach McDowell lead to a Rory birdie on 16, and the Northern Irishmen pull to within one with two to play.

12:45: Well, now. Sergio Garcia chips in for birdie on 16, and he and Colsaerts pull to within one of Zach Johnson/Jason Dufner with two to play.

Snedeker and Furyk lead McIlroy and McDowell 2-up with three to play.

12:40: The afternoon pairings have been announced. Fourball.

Dustin Johnson/Matt Kuchar vs. Nicolas Colsaerts/Paul Lawrie.

Bubba Watson/Webb Simpson vs. Justin Rose/Francesco Molinari.

Tiger Woods/Steve Stricker vs. Sergio Garcia/Luke Donald.

Jason Dufner/Zach Johnson vs. Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter.

12:35: Poulter/Rose get Europe on the board on Saturday, holding on for a 1-up victory against Watson/Simpson. But it was close. Simpson missed a birdie putt on 18 that would have squared the match and earned half a point. Poulter is now 10-3 in Ryder Cup play.

Overall score now is 6 1/2 to 3 1/2.

The USA leads the two matches still on the course.

12:10: Another missed putt from Watson, but Rose/Poulter don't make him pay. They miss a bogey putt on 16, and now the lead is 1-up as we head to 17. Veeerrrrryyyy interesting.

11:55: Getting closer to the end of the opening session of Day 2 now ... the USA leads 2-up in two matches, and Europe leads 2-up in one.

Poulter and Rose go to 16 2-up on Simpson/Watson, who missed a makeable birdie try on 15 to within one.

McIlroy and McDowell, 2 down to Snedeker and Furyk, have made a grand total of zero birdies today.

11:25: And the first point of Day 2 goes to the USA, and the lead overall is 6-3. Mickelson and Bradley laid waste to Donald/Westwood, 7 and 6 with a par at No. 12. Mickelson's approach, after a bad tee shot and a Bradley ricochet off a tree, landed left and rode the slope all the way down to within tap-in range and a conceded par.

Mickelson/Bradley are 3-0 so far this Ryder Cup. Is Davis Love III really going to sit them down in the afternoon?

Colsaerts and Garcia have squared their match with Johnson/Dufner through 11. Colsaerts is finding his putting stroke again, the one that he used Friday on his way to eight birdies and an eagle.

Despite the blowout by Mickelson/Bradley, this baby has changed completely. Poulter/Rose lead 2-up on Watson/Simpson, but it could have been 3-up. Both teams made bogey on 13. Furyk/Snedeker still 1-up on McIlroy/McDowell ... through 9.

11:00: Tightening up a bit. The USA leads three matches, Europe leads one. But Snedeker/Furyk are only 1-up on McIlroy/McDowell, and Dufner/Johnson are 1-up on Colsaerts/Garcia.

Mickelson and Bradley are closing in on a victory, 6-up through 11.

10:35: More sloppiness, and missed putts, from the Simpson/Watson team, and Poulter and Rose are now 1-up. Big change in this one.

On the other hand, Mickelson and Bradley lead 5-up through 9 against Donald and Westwood.

10:20: Poulter and Rose take advantage of US trouble on No. 9, and even up their match against Simpson and Watson. The USA now leads in three, and one is all square.

10:05: Just a quick update on the dynamic duo, AKA Mickelson and Bradley. Bradley's 332-yard drive on the par-5 seventh sets up another birdie, and they lead 4-up through 7 on Donald and Westwood.

Webb Simpson is not putting that well today ... another chance gone at 8. But they are still 1-up.

Garcia and Colsaerts get one back and are now only 1 down through 6 against Dufner and Johnson.

9:55: Some missed chances out there for the USA. Zach Johnson and Jason Dufner lead 2-up, but it could have been 3-up except Zach missed a makeable birdie on No. 5.

Same thing for Webb Simpson and Bubba Watson, who can't get in with bridie at No. 7 after Ian Poulter dumps his chip into a bunker. Still, they lead 1-up.

And the Americans still lead in all four matches. The other two: Bradley/Mickelson 3-up through 5, and Furyk/Snedeker 1-up through 4.

9:25: Webb Simpson makes a birdie -- after a huge drive from Bubba Watson -- and now the USA leads in all four matches. But don't stop the presses: Europe led in all four in the morning yesterday, and that ended up 2-2.

Mickelson-Bradley lead 2-up. Dufner and Johnson lead 1-up. Furyk and Snedeker blow a chance at 2 -- after Snedeker's near ace -- but still lead 1-up.

9:06: All four foursomes are on the course. McDowell, who struggled a bit in afternoon, starts off the same way with a tee shot into a fairway bunker. Furyk's tee shot finds the right side of the fairway.

This is a rematch of the opening match Friday, a contentious matchup with lots of ups and downs, lots of rulings, a bit of bad blood and a 1-up victory for McIlroy and McDowell.

Meanwhile Mickelson and Bradley are 2-up through 3, and the other matches are all square.

8:50: Mickelson and Bradley pick up where they left off. Mickelson knocks his approach on 1 to conceded birdie range, and they go 1-up when Donald can't make birdie.

On 2, Lee Westwood finds the water off the tee on the par-3, and Mickelson hits a beauty for another good chance at birdie.

8:33: And, we have a leader already. Poulter drains a birdie putt after a brilliant approach from Rose, and the Euros are 1-up.

Meanwhile, the chanting continues.

8:20: Let Day 2 begin. Or should we call it Round 2. Bubba Watson and Ian Poulter will hit the tee shots to begin. Poulter -- after calling for more noise, even while he stand over the ball -- finds a fairway bunker with his tee shot. Watson wants it even louder for his tee shot, and it is ... another missed fairway, but not bad in the not-too-high rough. And away we go.

The debates will go on now ... should fans really be roaring when guys are standing over the ball? Seemed to work this time.
