Ryder Cup cop who drove Rory McIlroy only did 'my duty'

USATODAY
Rory McIlroy defeated Keegan Bradley 2 and 1 in his single match on Sunday on the final day of the Ryder Cup. McIlroy got to the tee with less than 10 minutes to spare.

Patrick Rollins never struck a shot last week. He wasn't a captain's pick and he wasn't celebrating with the Europeans at the Ryder Cup.

But nobody would be surprised if European captain Jose Maria Olazabal sent him a gesture of thanks.

Rollins, the Lombard Deputy Police Chief, was the guy behind the wheel of the car that got Rory McIlroy to Medinah Country Club on Sunday.

McIlroy misjudged his tee time and arrived with less than 10 minutes to spare.

"I was just doing my duty," Rollins told Michael Sneed of the Chicago Sun-Times. "The Ryder Cup was won on the golf course and not on the road. But I am getting a lot of ribbing for not driving to the wrong golf course or getting a flat tire."

In Europe's Sunday comeback, McIlroy defeated Keegan Bradley 2&1.

Rollins said the golfer looked "stunned, anxious" but that he "kept reassuring him we'd get to the course on time."
