Brian Kelly taught Notre Dame players history of Miami (Fla.) rivalry

George Schroeder, USA TODAY Sports
Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly, shown vs. Michigan on Sept. 22, told his players about the Irish's last regular-season matchup against Miami, in 1990.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly knows — and wanted his players to know — the history of the Fighting Irish's rivalry with Miami (Fla.). Saturday was the first regular-season meeting since 1990 of what once was a heated series. (They met in the 2010 Sun Bowl as well.)

This week, the coach made sure his players knew some of the history. On Monday, he showed video highlights from the 1985 game, won 58-7 by Miami as the Hurricanes — at least, from the perspective off the Irish — ran up the score.

"They had no idea," Kelly said. "I wanted to do that not because,'Hey, you owe something to Miami and I want to get you all fired up.' I wanted them to be locked in on their opponent. And when your opponent takes you behind the woodshed, that gets your attention."

Through three quarters, Notre Dame was exacting its revenge, up 34-3.
