I know what you're thinking: Why can't this referee just shoot Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase a quick high-five? Just a little one? Please?
The referee knows that doing so would snowball. High-five Scheelhaase, then he'd need to high-five Montee Ball once Wisconsin's running back got into the end zone.
Then another player would take it to another level, including the referee in an impromptu end-zone celebration; then the referee would become a sideshow, and that's not good.
The referee made the right move – not very gracefully, but it was the right decision.
Referees are the best. Totally fair, balanced, even-keeled and unbiased. Except Pac-12 referees. And NFL replacement referees. And the referees coasting your team a surefire victory. Those referees are the worst.
Thanks toTom Fornelli for the GIF.
