Looking ahead to this week's USA TODAY Coaches Poll

Despite not playing on Saturday, don't look for Alabama to drop out of its perch atop the USA TODAY Coaches Poll. But with several undefeated teams losing yesterday, expect significant changes among the top 10 spots in this week's rankings.

No. 3 LSU lost to No. 11 Florida, No. 4 Florida State to North Carolina State, No. 5 Georgia to No. 6 South Carolina and No. 9 Texas to No. 7 West Virginia.

No. 13 TCU, No. 20 Nebraska, No. 22 Northwestern and No. 24 Texas Tech also lost, meaning that there could be three or four new teams in this week's poll, which will be released around midday Sunday.

With both LSU and Florida State suffering unexpected losses – very unexpected, when it comes to the Seminoles – South Carolina will have a strong case for being ranked No. 3 in this week's rankings. Oregon will remain No. 2 after running past Washington late last night.

West Virginia's road win over the Longhorns should push the Mountaineers up three spots to No. 4. While Kansas State has the inside track for No. 5, voters will have to at least consider Florida, which took a page out of LSU's playbook in beating the Tigers, 14-6, in Gainesville.

And what happens to teams like LSU, Florida State, Georgia and Texas? How far will they fall?

Prepare yourself for the following top five: Alabama, Oregon, South Carolina, West Virginia and Kansas State. Who saw this coming back in August? (Outside of Alabama and Oregon, that is.)

Louisiana Tech is one team with a great chance at breaking into a national ranking. The Bulldogs moved to 5-0 by beating UNLV, 58-31. After receiving votes last week, Louisiana Tech should be ranked in advance of this coming Saturday's game against Texas A&M.

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer celebrates with his players after defeating Nebraska, 63-38, at Ohio Stadium.

What this week's Coaches Poll will be missing is a Big Ten team; Ohio State, 6-0 after beating Nebraska, is not eligible for a ranking due to the one-year postseason ban handed down by the NCAA.

The Big Ten's best hope might be Michigan, which moved to 3-2 after beating Purdue. Another option is Michigan State, though the Spartans needed 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to beat Indiana, 31-27.

Five teams moving up in the polls:

1. Florida (5-0, 4-0). The Gators, No. 11 last week, have a strong case for being among the top five.

2. Oregon State (4-0, 3-0). One of two undefeated teams in the Pac-12.

3. Texas A&M (4-1, 2-1). The Aggies' lone loss, to Florida, looks better and better.

4. Duke (5-1, 2-0). Yes, Duke.

5. Arizona State (4-1, 2-0). The Sun Devils stand atop the Pac-12 South.

Five teams falling behind:

1. Nebraska (4-2, 1-1). Bo Pelini's defense has been shredded by dual-threat quarterbacks.

2. Texas Tech (4-1, 1-1). The Red Raiders, No. 24 in last week's poll, lost by 21 points to Oklahoma.

3. Ohio (6-0, 2-0). Despite maintaining its winning streak, Ohio has looked unimpressive in wins over Massachusetts and Buffalo.

4. UCLA (4-2, 1-2). You can understand a 27-20 loss to Oregon State. A 43-17 loss to California? Harder to explain.

5. TCU (4-1, 1-1). The Horned Frogs lost to Iowa State. How bad will things get over the remainder of Big 12 play?
