Rex Ryan doesn't regret failed onside kick

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Rex Ryan has earned his reputation for being a bold head coach in his four seasons with the New York Jets.

Ryan furthered it on Monday by calling a surprise onside kick in the third quarter of the Jets' 23-17 loss to the Houston Texans.

Unfortunately for him and the Jets, it didn't work. The Texans recovered the kick.

"That was me all the way. I came here to win," Ryan said. "That's it, whatever it takes."

The Jets had just pulled to within 6 points on a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Joe McKnight. They had no business being within one score, so perhaps Ryan thought the Texans were staggered and would be sloppy on the ensuing kickoff.

Most of the players on Houston's front line began bailing to set up their blocks on the return, but backup safety Shiloh Keo stayed home. When the Jets' Chaz Schilens couldn't make the play, Keo recovered.

"If I caught it, we probably would have won the game," Schilens said. "A huge letdown on my part."

Said Ryan, "It's unfortunate we didn't execute it. I thought we had a really good kick, and their kid made a really nice play on us. I'm never going to look back and regret going for something, I can promise you that."
