Terrell Owens tweet to Jets: 'Let's make it happen'

Terrell Owens has never been one for subtlety. As a primetime audience watched the New York Jets' depleted receiving corps drop several key passes and saw cornerback Antonio Cromartie play offense for the first time since high school, the man with the second-highest receiving yards in NFL history publicly begged for a job with the team.

"Hey JETS!!! I'm available! I'm ready, willing & able! Call my agent@jordanwoy & let's make it happen." the 38-year-old free agent tweeted during the fourth quarter of the team's 23-17 loss to Houston.

Despite losing wideout Santonio Holmes for the season, the Jets opted to sign journeyman Jason Hill last week rather than take a chance on Owens, who failed to make the Seattle Seahawks roster in training camp this summer. With receiver Clyde Gates suffering a shoulder injury Monday night, the team may find itself even thinner at the position heading into its Week 6 matchup versus Indianapolis.

Last week, Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum told the Star Ledger that he was looking for a player who was "speedy, younger than 30 and someone who took part in training camp," to fill Holmes' spot on the roster. That criteria fit Hill, but will it remain in place if they need to add another playmaker?

Either way, Owens' public entreaties aren't likely to do him any favors. It's pretty clear that the Jets knew how to find him before his Twitter plea, which wasn't even directed to the team's official account. If anything, it made him sound like another washed-up athlete who keeps begging for work (among other things) via social media. Maybe Owens should follow suit and aim a little higher with his latest career aspirations.
