Kings scouts posthumously get their day with the Cup

USATODAY
The families of late scouts Mark Bavis and Ace Bailey get their day with the Stanley Cup at Ground Zero.

One of the many tragedies that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001, was when the Los Angeles Kings learned that two of their own had died in the terrorist attacks.

Garnet "Ace" Bailey, the team's director of pro scouting, and amateur scout Mark Bavis had been heading from Boston to Kings organizational meetings when their United 175 flight was hijacked and crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Center.

As the champion Kings continued giving team members their day with the Cup, they made sure the two had theirs.

Sunday, the Cup was brought to the 9/11 memorial at Ground Zero, where the families of Bailey and Bavis got a chance to take part in the Kings' first championship in franchise history.

The Stanley Cup is placed near the names of Mark Bavis and Ace Bailey.
