What about Bob? RGIII has no ill will toward Umenyiora

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – At the beginning of a conference call with New York/New Jersey media Wednesday, a member of the Washington Redskins media relations team announced "Robert Griffin, Jr." was on the line. It was the second time in three days someone made that mistake, as Fox's Dick Stockton also did it during Sunday's broadcast of Redskins win over the Minnesota Vikings.

Add that one to the list of names Robert Griffin III has been called – right next to "Bob," a nickname New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora gave him this summer in suggesting he hadn't yet earned "RGIII."

For a few days, a couple of members of the Washington media called Griffin "Bob" for laughs.

"Other than that, it really hasn't stuck," Griffin said Wednesday. "I don't plan on letting it stick, either."

Neither did Umenyiora. After Griffin's Griffin's 320-yard passing performance against the New Orleans Saints in Week 1, the two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher told USA TODAY Sports he'd already earned his moniker.

"Yes," Umenyiora said. "I will call him RGIII."

Griffin took note of Umenyiora's retraction.

"Osi's a guy that's proven himself in the league. He's a sack master, he's done a lot of great things over his career, so I didn't mind it at all," he said. "I got where he was coming from, I know why everybody blew it out of proportion because it's the Redskins and the Giants. But I also remember him saying after the Saints game he would call me whatever I wanted to be called. So I mean, it's not something to build up or make a big deal of.

"Whatever he wants to call me, it doesn't matter. I've had people call me worse things on the field. It doesn't bother me at all. But I look forward to playing against those guys."

One more question of a guy who's gone by Robert: Has anybody ever called him Bob?

"Not really. My dad didn't want people calling me Bob," he said. "If they asked me what my name was, I never really threw Bob out there. But one of my coaches at Baylor used to always call me Bob because no one else called me that. He wanted to have that name on lock. It was kind of funny. But other than that, not really."
