Is Joe Flacco losing faith in the Baltimore Ravens defense?

Chris Chase, USA TODAY Sports
Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, top, prepares for a play in the first half of an NFL football game against the Dallas Cowboys in Baltimore, Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012.

As the Dallas Cowboys were driving for a potential game-tying score on Sunday, Joe Flacco showed little faith in the Baltimore Ravens defense preventing it.

The Ravens quarterback was mic'd up for NFL Network's Sound FX and is seen frustrated on the sideline, conceding a Cowboys touchdown that would have cut the score to 31-29 pending a two-point conversion.

"They should just put [the ball] on the 2-yard line and go for the two-point conversion," Flacco said to tight end Dennis Pitta because that's what it's going to come down to."

As always, the whole Sound FX piece is worth the watch, but the moment we're referencing starts at the 2:12 mark:

The Ravens defense had already given up 440 yards to the Cowboys by that point, so it's not as if Flacco's lack of faith was misguided. And he didn't bad mouth the D, per se. In fact, he seemed confident that they could hold on the potential two-point stand. (Which they did.) Is it good that Flacco had more faith in Tony Romo's clutch ability than his defense? Of course not. But without Ray Lewis, Ladarius Webb and Terrell Suggs, can you blame him?

Jim Corbett of USA TODAY Sports asked Flacco about the quote on Thursday.

"You watch games on TV and you look at the history of things, that's usually what happens in those games," Flacco said. "That was kind of the thought I had at that point. [...] They had a good offense and they were playing well and it was just the rhythm of the game.''

It probably felt cathartic for Flacco to worry about his defense. For the past five years, he's been the one on the field getting doubted. The shoe's on the other foot now.
