Michael Phelps named 'fittest man ever' by 'Men's Health'

Chris Chase, USA TODAY Sports
Michael Phelps was named the fittest man ever.

Michael Phelps was named the fittest man ever by Men's Health magazine, beating out the likes of Bruce Lee, Charles Atlas and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The 18-time Olympic gold medalist was selected for the "body he built" and what he did with it.

Phelps is as reasonable a choice as anyone. When you're the greatest Olympic champion ever, fittest man ever isn't too much of a stretch. (Though it doesn't explain why Carl Lewis and Jeese Owens are behind the guy from 300.)

The full list of 100 is as preposterous as any comparing Mr. T., Harry Houdini and Karl Malone could be. Michael Jordan ranks No. 21, just behind No. 20 Richard Simmons. Marky Mark beats out Chuck Norris. L.L. Cool J is on the list. Three cyclists (Miguel Indurain, Greg Lemond and, yes, Lance Armstrong) are in the top 50.
