Evaluating the fashions of Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and other players at the WTA Championships party

It's our favorite tennis time of the year: Prom night at the WTA Championships!

Before the year-end tournament, the top-eight tennis players dress up for a pre-party and take a group photo. We love to break it down.

The men do this too for the ATP Championships, only they all wear dark suits and it's not nearly as fun. Their group shot looks like those bad high-school yearbooks where every senior male has to wear the same ill-fitting tuxedo (except you, David Ferrer. Keep on keepin' on). We demand individuality from our tennis championship photoshoots and the women come through beautifully.

(L-R) Li Na of China, Angelique Kerber of Germany, Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, Maria Sharapova of Russia, Serena Williams of USA, Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland and Sara Errani of Italy pose for the official photo of the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships.

Li Na-- Understated and elegant. The dress is nice too.

Angelique Kerber -- Prom groups always have one member who feel excited to be hanging with the cool kids. Kerber was ranked No. 92 last September. Now she's No. 5 in the world.

Petra Kvitova -- (See: Williams, Serena)

Victoria Azarenka -- When you're the world No. 1, you can wear pants to a fancy party.

Maria Sharapova -- Masha can make anything look good. Still, with the beige coat and belted white dress, I can't shake the feeling that she's going to leave Istanbul to fly to New York and shutter Newsweek

Serena Williams -- Poor Petra Kvitova. She looks lovely in her red dress then shows up and Serena is wearing, and killing it in, the same thing. It's like going to a wedding and seeing Joan from Mad Men sitting next to you in the same exact outfit you bought yesterday.

Agnieszka Radwanska -- Earthy look for the Pole, almost like she's about to come down from the mountain with a lyre to serenade her competitors.

Sara Errani -- Even Sara Errani is wondering how she got there.

Play begins Tuesday in Istanbul.
