Brandon Graham blames Juan Castillo for Eagles' D woes

Simon Samano, USA TODAY Sports
Brandon Graham (54) and the Eagles defense have squandered their share of fourth-quarter leads in the last 22 games.

Last offseason, Juan Castillo accepted an offer from Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid to switch from offensive line coach to defensive coordinator.

How that move made any sense we'll never understand, but it happened, and 22 games later Castillo was fired for guiding a defense that's blown plenty of fourth-quarter leads during his tenure.

Third-year defensive end Brandon Graham took the time Wednesday to shed some light on why (read: place blame on Castillo).

"I think we started running the same stuff over and over and not switching it up as much," Graham told CSNPhilly.com. "A lot of time we ran the same coverage, stuff like that. I listen to the calls every play – 'Coach, what do we have this play? What do we have this play,' and it was always pretty much the same stuff."

On the contrary, Graham said new coordinator Todd Bowles has expressed a desire to mix things up.

"That's what he talked about, not being predictable in the fourth quarter, because by the fourth quarter everybody knows what we're going to do, and that's how we get beat," Graham said. "I think Coach Bowles, it's going to be fun to see what he's going to be doing, because I think everything we run in practice we're going to actually really run in the game."

We hate when guys throw guys under the bus, and it's even worse when it happens to someone who already has been fired. Obviously Graham is pleased with Castillo's dismissal and happy with Bowles taking over, but Graham better be careful what he wishes for.

The Eagles face a tough test this Sunday with the Atlanta Falcons coming to town. If things don't change with Bowles calling the shots, then it'll look more like Castillo got a raw deal.
