Fox announcer's embarrassing World Series gaffe

Bob Velin, USA TODAY Sports
Fox announcer Tim McCarver said Barry Manilow used to hear chants of "Barry! Barry! Barry!" at AT&T Park.

Surely, Timmy was kidding, right?

"Barry! Barry! Barry!" The AT&T Park crowd was chanting after Giants pitcher Barry Zito got a base hit Wednesday night in Game 1 of the World Series in San Francisco.

After Tim McCarver said that was not a sound Zito has been hearing too often around these parts, Fox broadcast partner Joe Buck laid one right in McCarver's wheelhouse:

"They used to say it for somebody else around here," Buck said.

To which McCarver replied: "When Barry Manilow was playing in a concert."

Of course! You remember baseball's all-time home run king, Barry Manilow.

"Or Barry Bonds," Buck teased.

Later in the inning, Buck said to McCarver: "Come back to me over there."

"Sorry, it's one of those moments," McCarver laughed.

Yeah, one of those senior moments.

The twitterati had a field day with this one, as Barry Manilow was trending.

@Janewells: This is only the 5th game that Barry Manilow has not
gotten to first base since the release of "Mandy" in 1974. #MadeUpStats

@EricStangel: BREAKING: Yankees sign Barry Manilow to 10 year- $275 million contract... #WorldSeries

@JPosnanski: "Barry Manilow" did indeed trend. And people say America
is not what it once was. Please.

@Sherman_report: At least Barry Manilow wasn't on steroids.
