Trick play goes awry for Robert Griffin III (VIDEO)

Chris Strauss, USA TODAY Sports
Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III (10) and Redskins linebacker Lorenzo Alexander (97) head back onto the field for the second half of Sunday's game in Pittsburgh.

We've gotten used to Robert Griffin III doing some unprecedented things for a rookie. In the second quarter of Sunday's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Griffin did something extremely rare for a quarterback when he was flagged for an offensive pass interference call.

On third-and-four, Griffin handed the ball off to wide receiver Josh Morgan on an endaround and took off sprinting down the left side of the field. Picked up in coverage by Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor, Griffin pushed off while Morgan's pass was headed his way, drawing a flag before being leveled by safety Ryan Clark.

Two things on this play. First, I can't recall another time where a quarterback lined up and took a snap behind center and ended up being flagged for offensive pass interference on the same play. Our NFL columnist, Jarrett Bell, agreed, tweeting, "For the first time in my years covering NFL, think I just saw a quarterback flagged for offensive pass interference. Yep, #RG3pushed off."

Also, what happened to the Redskins trying to limit the rookie's exposure to potential risk? After Griffin was knocked out of the team's Week 5 contest versus Atlanta, both the player and team vowed that he would do things like run out of bounds rather than take defenders head on or throw the ball away when under pressure in the pocket. Why put the franchise player at risk of taking exactly the kind of open field shot he ended up absorbing?

It's understandable that the Redskins figured they might catch the Steelers defense off guard on such a trick play and had Morgan found an open RGIII behind the secondary the call would've certainly been lauded. Instead, it just looks like one more lowlight on a day that was full of them for Washington.
