College soccer player arrested for punching official

Chris Strauss, USA TODAY Sports
UCSB defender Peter McGlynn was arrested for allegedly punching a referee following the team's overtime loss to UC Davis

A college soccer player for UC Santa Barbara managed an impressive trifecta during a 2-1 overtime loss to conference rival UC Davis on Sunday.

In addition to collecting a yellow card in overtime and a red card after UC Davis' game-winning goal, defender Peter McGlynn also found himself the recipient of a pair of handcuffs following his arrest for punching the game's referee.

According to KEYT-TV, UCSB Police said the senior from Skerries, Ireland allegedly punched one of the officials and was restrained by campus security before he was handcuffed on the field and taken in for questioning. While McGlynn wasn't booked, police were recommending charges.

One witness at the game tweeted that McGlynn "DID NOT punch the ref at the game today. He DID push him down from behind."

Video of the incident hasn't surfaced yet so we'll refrain judgment on just how boneheaded a move McGlynn made until we see it. Hopefully he at least tapped him a little harder than this guy (below) to warrant the arrest.
