Jacksonville TV station sparks Tebow to Jaguars rumors

Chris Strauss, USA TODAY Sports
Despite a Jacksonville station's report, the Jets say they don't plan to trade Tim Tebow.

The NFL's most famous backup quarterback is the subject of trade rumors yet again, this time put out by a Jacksonville area television station.

ActionNewsJax.com cited anonymous sources Tuesday night that the Jaguars are "making a play to trade for (Tim) Tebow before the trade deadline this Thursday."

Numerous other reporters have debunked the story, including writers from the New York Daily News and NFL.com, saying that the Jaguars have not been in contact with the New York Jets regarding Tebow, who reportedly has been spending a few of his bye week off days back in his hometown.

While the deal is unlikely to happen, the better question is, why shouldn't it?

If Tebow still hasn't gotten a shot to do his thing at quarterback for the Jets despite Mark Sanchez's putrid play, he's not likely to get that opportunity. He's been on the field for 55 snaps in eight games, serving mostly as a decoy for a team with the NFL's 27th-ranked offense.

Jacksonville has been even worse, ranking last in the NFL in total offense as second-year starter Blaine Gabbert has been mostly ineffective. With the team struggling to sell tickets, acquiring Tebow would be a purely economic move for Jaguars owner Shad Khan, who has struggled to fill EverBank Field this season.

As an op-ed on Jacksonville.com detailed Wednesday, it's not as though most Jaguars fans would have an issue with it.

It's still probably not going to happen. But, hey, Thursday's extended trade deadline falls on All Saints Day. You never know.
