Breaking down Doug Martin's historic, remarkable, record-setting and baffling Sunday

Chris Chase, USA TODAY Sports
Doug Martin of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers celebrates after he scored one of his four touchdowns.

The following is a semi-comprehensive breakdown of Sunday's record-setting performance by Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie Doug Martin in the team's 42-32 victory over the Oakland Raiders:

1. Ran for 31 yards in first half.

2. Ran for 220 yards and four touchdowns in the second half.

3. Scored two touchdowns totaling 137 yards on back-to-back carries in the third quarter.

4. Became the first man in NFL history to have three touchdown runs of 45+ yards. The rushing yards and touchdowns set Bucs team records.

5. Having carried 18 times for 244 yards, Martin was taken out of the game for LeGarrette Blount on a crucial late-game drive that could have sealed the game for Tampa. Blount and quarterback Josh Freeman proceeded to fumble a snap that gave the Raiders life.

6. With the Bucs holding on to a three-point lead with 3:51 left, Martin returned to the game and carried the ball once on a three-and-out drive.

7. After Carson Palmer did his best Carson Palmer impression by throwing a crippling late-game pick, Martin sealed the game with the last of his four touchdowns.

8. After Carson Palmer did another Carson Palmer impression by throwing a meaningless late-game pick, Bucs coach Greg Schiano brought Martin back in the game. The Bucs were up 10 points with 1:38 left and Oakland had one timeout. Martin carried the ball three times and lost 14 yards.

9. That bears repeating: After spelling Martin for Blount (and almost having it lead to a game-killing fumble), Schiano brought back Martin and made him carry the ball three times in garbage time. He was saving him on the drive he needed him and running him on a drive that was meaningless? Say what you will about the tenets of Greg Schiano's late-game strategies, at least it's an ethos.

10. Those lost 14 yards moved Martin from 8th to 10th on the list of most single-game rushing yards.

11. On his first eight carries, Martin ran for 31 yards. On his last seven carries, he ran for seven yards. That's 15 carries for 38 yards bookending his day. On those middle 10 carries, Martin had 213 yards and four touchdowns.
