NCAA football re-ranking: Our list from 1-124

Paul Myerberg, USA TODAY Sports
Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson takes off and runs during an overtime win over Pittsburgh.

The weekly re-ranking was so, so close to having a new No. 1 – and a new No. 4. But as in this week's USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, the 1-124 re-ranking features the same top four in the same order as a week ago: Alabama, Oregon, Kansas State and Notre Dame.

By surviving early November tests, the top quartet continued to distance themselves from the rest of the FBS. The other two undefeated teams still standing in the FBS, No. 5 Ohio State and No. 10 Louisville, will remain on the outside looking in if the top four remain unbeaten.

This week's re-ranking also presents an interesting dilemma: Are there two-loss teams that deserve to be ranked higher than a one-loss team? I think LSU has made a strong case for remaining ahead of not only several one-loss teams but also Louisville, due to the Cardinals' unimpressive schedule.

Speaking of unimpressive, you'll need to scroll through 17 names to find the first bowl-eligible team from the Big Ten. Nebraska clocks in at No. 18, six spots ahead of Michigan. Even when counting Ohio State, the only BCS conference with fewer teams in the re-ranking's top 25 is the Big East, which has only Louisville.

On the back end of the list, you'll find Southern Mississippi and Massachusetts jostling for No. 124. On one hand, the 0-9 Minutemen have lost only one game by less than 11 points. (Seven loss are by 24 or more points.) On the other hand, the 0-9 Golden Eagles just lost at home to UAB. Edge, Southern Miss.
