NFL Films honors the late Steve Sabol in so many ways

If not for the power and the glory of NFL Films, who knows if the NFL would be as popular as it is today? And if not for the late Steve Sabol, and his football filmmaking ingenuity, NFL Films wouldn't be so amazing.

So it's only fitting that on Friday at its headquarters in Mount Laurel, N.J., a private memorial was held to honor Sabol, who died in September after succumbing to brain cancer.

NFL Films was nice enough to share on its Facebook page what was done to honor Sabol:

  • The address to headquarters officially has been changed to One Sabol Way, and the sign at the property's entrance reflects the change.
  • In front of the building, alongside the American and NFL Films flags, an "SDS" flag now flies. SDS are Sabol's initials, Stephen Douglas Sabol, also known as "Sudden Death Sabol."
  • The area outside the main lobby was renamed "Sudden Death Alley" after his nickname.
  • Sabol's parking spot used to have his name painted on it. Now it has three stars to represent the past, present and future of NFL Films.
  • Behind the reception desk hangs a photo of Sabol with his father and co-founder, Ed Sabol, along with one of Steve's great quotes: "Life is great. Football is better."

Steve Sabol no longer roams the hallways at NFL Films, but he never will be forgotten.
