Major time gaffe makes 72 seconds run off clock in 49ers-Rams game (VIDEO)

Head coach Jim Harbaugh of the San Francisco 49ers talks with referee Clete Bakeman.

The timekeeper and officials in Sunday's game between the San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams mistakenly let 72 seconds run off the clock in the second quarter while a spot was being measured.

While fans collectively buzzed about the running clock and Jim Harbaugh expressed confusion, neither the refs nor the timekeeper was aware that 13:32 had turned into 12:10 during the measurement.

"We are checking the game clock for accuracy," Clete Blakeman said, before he'd check with fellow NFL employees in the booth, learn of the mistake and reset the game clock back to 13:32.

"The game clock is correct," he said later.

What? Was Candlestick Park entered into a new dimension of the space-time continuum in which time moves at a different rate of speed? How did 72 seconds just disappear? Where did they go? Surely someone noticed this. Was Rose Mary Woods working as timekeeper? And how is that not reviewable?

There were other clock errors in the game. While sitting on a timeout, St. Louis got a delay of game on a potential game-winning kick in overtime. And a final play by the Rams appeared to end with 0:01 on the clock in the extra session, but the timekeeper seemed to hit it late and the game ended.
