The weekly FBS re-ranking: Our list from 1-124

Paul Myerberg, USA TODAY Sports
Quarterback Marcus Mariota, center, and his Oregon teammates are No. 1 in this week's re-rank.

There are four undefeated teams left in the FBS. That's four times as many undefeated teams as winless teams, after Massachusetts beat Akron on Saturday to notch its first win of the 2012 season (and its first as a part of the FBS). With UMass out of the picture, last place in this week's 1-124 re-ranking belongs solely to Southern Mississippi.

'Twas the night before Christmas, and Southern Miss beat Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl to cap the most successful season in program history: 12 wins, one conference championship, a top 20 finish and the most prolific offense in school history, for starters.

Just 324 days later, the Golden Eagles are in an embarrassingly exclusive club. Following Saturday's loss to Southern Methodist, Southern Miss is only the second FBS program in recent college football history to go from winning 10 or more games to losing 10 or more games in the span of a single season. Ball State, which went from 12-2 in 2008 to 2-10 in 2009, is the other.

The argument over which team will end the year No. 1 rages on. But through 11 weeks, there's no team that has come close to nearing Southern Miss' level of incompetence. That the Golden Eagles are less than a calendar year removed from the program's high point makes this year's slide all the more hard to believe.

Five noteworthy jumps

1. Syracuse, 14 spots (No. 74 to No. 60). The Orange are good for one jaw-dropping win every season, it seems.

2. Missouri, 13 spots (No. 70 to No. 57). The Tigers will head to bowl play in their first year in the SEC.

3. San Diego State, 8 spots (No. 36 to No. 28). This team just keeps on winning, often impressively – as against Boise State and Air Force.

4. Ball State, 8 spots (No. 48 to No. 40). Coach Pete Lembo keeps proving himself to be one of the very best in the business.

5. Texas A&M, 4 spots (No. 13 to No. 9). The Aggies become the highest-ranked two-loss team.

Five noteworthy drops

1. Pittsburgh, 16 spots (No. 61 to No. 77). Following up the Notre Dame game with a loss to Connecticut probably wasn't what the Panthers had in mind.

2. Western Kentucky, 12 spots (No. 64 to No. 76). The Hilltoppers are now an afterthought in the Sun Belt race.

3. Toledo, 12 spots (No. 21 to No. 33). The Rockets drop out of the top 25 after losing at home to Ball State.

4. Auburn, 5 spots (No. 106 to No. 111). Another awful performance has Gene Chizik's seat growing hotter, if that's possible.

5. Alabama, 4 spots (No. 1 to No. 5). The Crimson Tide move out of the top spot, but don't fall far.
