Jeff Green found out he needed heart surgery less than a year ago.
He's back.
Green had 16 points off the bench in the Boston Celtics' 98-93 win Wednesday against the Utah Jazz. He also had a top contender for dunk of the year.
With Boston's lead trimmed to four, Green took a pass in the left corner and drove right around Paul Millsap, then embarrassed Jazz star Al Jefferson. Al Jefferson is 6-10, 289 pounds. And Green destroyed him.
Green had surgery last December to repair an aortic aneurysm that cost him all of last season, which would have been his first in Boston. An aortic aneurysm is a swelling of the main artery that pumps blood from the heart. But the No. 5 overall pick in the 2007 draft was cleared to play, and the Celtics decided to keep him around.
His play has been uneven thus far, but Wednesday's performance was a highlight. The 16 points were a season high, and the dunk was something special.
Let's take another look at that:
We're giving Green a slight edge on Atlanta Hawks point guard Jeff Teague for dunk of the year honors right now. Here are a few contenders:
- Teague, 6-2, slams over 6-9 Kevin Durant.
- JaVale McGee and DeAndre Jordan show what 7-footers can do.
- Gerald Green looks down at the basket.
- Rudy Gay goes two-handed with the reverse.
