Temple and RB set several rushing records against Army

Temple running back Montel Harris celebrates with teammates after scoring one of his school-record seven touchdowns against Army.

Temple's Montel Harris had one of the finest games by a running back in Football Bowl Subdivision history Saturday, rushing for 351 yards and seven touchdowns in the Owls' 63-32 win against Army.

Temple set a Big East single-game record with nine rushing scores, with running back Matt Brown chipping in a pair of touchdowns before leaving the game with an injury in the second quarter.

The Owls rushed for 534 yards as a team, the second-highest single-game total in conference history. In 2002, former Big East member West Virginia gained 536 yards against East Carolina.

Harris set two school and Big East records, for rushing yards and touchdowns by a single player. His 351 yards narrowly broke the old Temple record of 349 yards, previously held by Paul Palmer. He came up one touchdown short of tying the FBS record for touchdowns in a game, set by former Illinois back Howard Griffith on Sept. 22, 1990.

As of seven months ago, Harris was expected to be churning out another 1,000-yard season for Boston College, where he entered his senior year as the most prolific rusher in program history.

In late May, however, Boston College coach Frank Spaziani dismissed Harris from the program for a violation of team rules. He transferred to Temple in July, rejoining former Boson College assistants Kevin Rogers and Ryan Day.

Harris' 351 yards on Saturday would be 40.2% of the Eagles' 873 rushing yards as a team after a 30-23 loss to Virginia Tech. His 948 yards on the season dwarfs the Eagles' total as a team. (Boston College is 2-9.)
