Hunter gets No. 48 for Superstorm Sandy donation

George Sipple, Detroit Free Press
The Tigers introduced Torii Hunter on Friday after finalizing their $26 million, two-year deal with the free agent outfielder.

Torii Hunter will continue to wear the No. 48 jersey with the Detroit Tigers.

Right-hander Rick Porcello had worn No. 48 in 2012 but gave it up after Hunter signed a two-year, $26 million contract.

"Veteran guys usually give a nice dollar amount for a number," Hunter said. "I offered him a nice dollar amount, and he said, 'No.' I'm like, 'What's wrong with him?' "

Porcello, who is from New Jersey, told Hunter that he knew some people affected by Hurricane Sandy.

"He said, 'The money that you offered me, could you donate it to this organization for Hurricane Sandy?' " Hunter said Friday at Comerica Park. "That's the kind of guy Rick Porcello is. He freely gave me No. 48."

The Tigers announced that Porcello will wear No. 21, which he wore in high school.
