It's been 13 years since former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Rae Carruth committed one of the most appalling crimes in NFL history.
On November 16, 1999, the then 25-year-old athlete arranged the shooting of Cherica Adams, a Charlotte real estate agent who was eight months pregnant with his child. Adams fell into a coma after her admission to a local hospital and died a month later, but not before giving birth to a son who was born with cerebral palsy due to the shooting.
This month's Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel, which premieres Tuesday night on HBO, catches up with 13-year-old Chancellor Adams, as well as the grandmother who is raising him.
The teenager, whose story was detailed in a lengthy Sports Illustrated profile in September, tries to live as normal a life as he can and even won a gold medal in the 30-meter dash of a local Special Olympics competition in his motorized wheelchair. Carruth, who received a sentence of 18 to 24 years for the crime, is scheduled to be released from jail in October 2018, when his son will be 18 years old.
