Braylon Edwards rips Jets, apologizes, gets cut

Chris Strauss, USA TODAY Sports
Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Braylon Edwardswarms up before the NFL football game against the Green Bay Packers in September.

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Braylon Edwards was released by the team Tuesday, a day after he called the people who run the New York Jets franchise "idiots." He later apologized for his remarks.

The release isn't believed to be connected to the rant. Edwards was waived with an injury distinction, but no specific injury was cited. It is believed to be a knee injury.

The Seahawks now have only five healthy wide receivers. Edwards had just eight catches for 74 yards and one touchdown in 10 games.

Edwards defended his former New York Jets teammate Mark Sanchez on Twitter Monday night, criticizing the people running the franchise instead.

Via @OfficialBraylon:

"Don't blame Sanchez. I played there. Blame the idiots calling shots. Mark is a beast and will probe it when given a proper chance"

On Tuesday, Edwards took it all back on Twitter.

"I would like to apologize to the Jets family and my fans for my emotional outburst. Mark is a friend and former teammate, who I wholeheartedly support. Nonetheless, I have disrespected and insulted an administration that I have the utmost respect for," he wrote.

Did he know he was about to be unemployed and didn't want to shrink the employment pool? If so, too late.

By "idiots calling shots," you can assume he means head coach Rex Ryan, general manager Mike Tannenbaum and possibly owner Woody Johnson. It seems like Edwards meant to say "prove" instead of "probe," although perhaps Sanchez was writing an inquiry into his own beastliness on his clipboard after his benching Sunday. It's as good as any other theory floating around the internet.

While Sanchez's struggles this season are well documented, Edwards hasn't been able to come to close to his production with the Jets since leaving the team.
