Michael Phelps says 'Call Me Maybe' video was key for Olympic swim team

The United States swim team won more gold medals in London than at any non-boycotted Olympics since 1972. According to Michael Phelps, USA Swimming owes its success to a plucky Canadian pop song.

The most successful Olympian in history sat for an interview with Costas Tonight this week and credited the team's viral Call Me Maybe video for bonding the team. The clip, which has over 10 million views on YouTube, was a sensation this summer before London.

"It's funny to say it now, but that Call Me Maybe video we did really brought us together," Phelps told Costas. "There are some of us who didn't really want to do it, felt kind of weird doing it, but I think it really just shows how we are as a team."

By "some of us who didn't really want to do it," Phelps must mean "me." He was Garbo-like in his reclusiveness, at least in the final cut. Pay special attention to 0:53 mark, when Phelps is sitting in a deck chair waiting to practice and greets with camera with outstretched arms and a look of resigned frustration.

Ryan Lochte doesn't make too many appearances either, except for that famous kiss. The women filming should have told him they were filming an episode of The Bachelor. He'd have totally gone along with it then
