Georgetown has another woeful offensive display in narrow Towson win

Scott M Gleeson, USA TODAY Sports
Georgetown Hoyas coach John Thompson III speaks with guard Markel Starks (5) during the second half against the Indiana Hoosiers at the Legends Classic Championship at Barclays Center. Indiana won 82-72.

After staging one of the worst offensive performances of the season in a 37-36 win over Tennessee, No. 23 Georgetown once again failed miserably in trying to put the ball in the basket during its narrow 46-40 win over Towson on Saturday.

At least this time both teams eclipsed the 40-point plateau. In each team's last win, both failed to score 40 points, which rarely happens in a Division I basketball game.

The Hoyas held Towson scoreless for almost the final five minutes to recover from a 17-point first half.

Yikes. At one point, Georgetown was shooting 9%. Where is Jack Taylor when you need him?

Greg Whittington scored 11 points and Mikael Hopkins and Otto Porter had 10 apiece for Georgetown (7-1), which shot 17% in the first half and 29% for the game. Georgetown won with defense, forcing 22 turnovers and pulling away — if it could be called that — with a 4-0 game-ending run.

Georgetown transfer Jerrelle Benimon had 11 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Tigers (4-5), who are rebuilding with only three scholarship players from last season's 1-31 team.

The tweets during and after the game told the story quite well, actually.

@ESPNStats:"Info Last time Georgetown allowed 41 points or fewer in 3 straight games was the 1942-43 season. #longtimeago"

@MedcalfByESPN:"The Georgetown squad that lost to Indiana in overtime? Top-25 for sure. The team that went soft on offense against Tenn and Towson now? Ugh"

@SethDavisHoops:"Georgetown leads Towson 43-40 with 3:51 to play. Hoyas are, uh, offensively challenged these days."
