Report: Tim Tebow to the Jaguars 'a virtual certainty'

Simon Samano, USA TODAY Sports
Tim Tebow stepped on the field in Jacksonville this season - for the Jets - but it just might be his home turf next year.

It was well known last offseason that Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan wanted Tim Tebow once the Denver Broncos put the polarizing quarterback on the trading block after signing Peyton Manning. But considering quarterback Blaine Gabbert had just finished his rookie season, the Jaguars' front office and coaches convinced Khan to give Gabbert another year.

Needless to say, Year Two of the Blaine Gabbert experiment has been abysmal. So who else would Khan prefer be the savior next season?

Jacksonville's own Tim Tebow, of course.

We received our first indication Saturday night that it very well could become a reality after ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that Tebow to the Jaguars is "a virtual certainty."

How does this happen, you ask? Well, the New York Jets are expected to trade or release Tebow after the season, though Mortensen, citing league sources, reports that the Jets will honor Tebow's forthcoming request to become a free agent.

Additionally, Mort went on to say that Jacksonville will have an open competition at the quarterback position in 2013, with a team source conceding it's a "high likelihood" Tebow will be given a shot to win the job.

I mean, c'mon, everyone knows this makes too much sense: Tebow's hometown, a new owner who wants a stadium sold out, a terrible quarterback situation already as it is, the chance to make this small-market team nationally relevant, and so on and so on.

It's perfect, isn't it?

Tebow to the Jaguars basically has to happen -- for the Jaguars and for Tebow. Because, let's face it, what other NFL team wants him and the media circus attached to him?

The Toronto Argonauts don't count. They play in the CFL, and not even Joe Theismann believes Tebow is good enough for the CFL.

Jaguars fan and Tim Tebow fan Bob Brown cheers when Tebow (15) runs into the tunnel before the start of the Jets-Jaguars game earlier this year. Brown wants what Shad Khan wants.
