Report: Tebow asked out of Jets 'Wildcat' formation

Chris Strauss, USA TODAY Sports
Tim Tebow runs off the field following the Jets' loss to San Diego Sunday afternoon.

Did a frustrated Tim Tebow tell Jets coaches not to use him in the Wildcat formation this week versus San Diego?

According to multiple sources in an ESPN New York report following the team's 27-17 loss to the Chargers Sunday, Tebow, upset with being passed over for Greg McElroy as the team's starting quarterback this week, told coaches not to use him in situational packages this week.

Via ESPN New York:

Tebow has been frustrated all season by his lack of playing time, but it culminated Tuesday upon hearing he would be passed over for a starting opportunity when Ryan decided to bench Mark Sanchez. Tebow was disappointed and upset enough to say he didn't want to be used situationally, sources said. He told the Jets coaches early in the week, giving Jeremy Kerley time to take the practice reps. Soon reports emerged speculating the backup was looking to play outside of New York next season.

Well, so much for the Tim Tebow era in New York ending quietly. After months of chaos, the 2012 New York Jets season has officially devolved into Lord of the Flies, where even the island's moral protagonist finally is corrupted into nefarious behavior. For months, even after Tebow was trashed by anonymous teammates and as he watched starter Mark Sanchez fail repeatedly, the former Heisman winner seemed to tow the team line. Was this final snub the equivalent of Rex Ryan destroying the conch?

According to the ESPN report, head coach Rex Ryan said that "it was a coach's decision" when asked specifically if Tebow had opted out. Asked who informed him he wouldn't be playing in Wildcat formations Sunday, Tebow said after the game, "it just kind of happens."

It is curious however, that Tebow was initially reported as inactive earlier Sunday morning before being listed as active on the team's official list about 90 minutes before gametime. This all stems off another ESPN report Saturday, also anonymously sourced, stating that Tebow playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars next season is "a virtual certainty."

Right now, the only actual certainty is that the Jets season ends after next Sunday's game in Buffalo. I'm sure the speculation on where Tebow goes next will go on for much longer.
