2024 NBA draft's first two picks show NBA going global

Names like Victor Wembanyama, Luka Dončić, Kristaps Porziņģis, Giannis Antetokounmpo are just a fraction of the foreign talent in the NBA and Wednesday’s NBA draft just added more.

A total of four French players were drafted in the first round, including the first two picks: Zaccharie Risacher picked number 1 and Alexandre Sarr drafted number 2. Tidjane Salaun was picked 6th, and Pacome Dadiet was drafted 25th.

"About 30% of our players are international," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said at the start of the Finals. Here are all the places where NBA teams have drawn talent from in the past 10 drafts:

Where NBA first-round draft picks came from

From 2013 through 2023, teams have selected 330 players in the first round of the NBA draft. The map below shows where they played in college, or if they didn't play in college, the players' hometown:

Two more French players (Melvin Ajinca, Armel Traore) are potential second-round picks Thursday. The second round is no stranger to talent as the Denver Nuggets drafted Nikola Jokić in the second round in 2014.

"When you think about the amount of basketball being played globally and the U.S. is a little less than 5% of the global population, that number of international players will only rise. Statistically, you’re going to see more top-notch international players in the league," said Silver.
