NBA first-round draft picks for 2024 are from near and far: We map their college/homeland

Five of the NBA's 2024 draftees are foreign, four from France alone.

The NBA continued showing a preference for France on Wednesday, drafting four players from the country in the first-round. First off, Zaccharie Risacher and Alexandre Sarr made history by becoming the first Frenchmen to go 1-2 in the NBA draft. Risacher was chosen first by the Atlanta Hawks, and Sarr was picked second by the Washington Wizards.

Two other French players were selected later in the first round: Tidjane Salaun was picked sixth by the Charlotte Hornets, and Pacome Dadiet, was picked 25th by New York Knicks.

The fifth foreign player was drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder: Serbian Nikola Topic at 12th overall.

Five of the 30 NBA first-round draft picks were foreign.

Four schools had two players go in the first round: Baylor, Kentucky, Colorado and Connecticut.

Birthplaces of NBA players

According to Basketball Reference, the NBA, BAA (Basketball Association of America) and ABA (American Basketball Association) have seen players from 90 foreign countries. The map below shows birthplaces of players who appeared in at least one NBA, BAA or ABA game. Remarkably, every U.S. state has had a player make it to the league and appear in at least one game except Vermont. But a few Vermont players have been close.
