'Caught on Camera' author Kim Law spreads romance love

USATODAY

I didn't think about it when I set out to write Caught on Camera, but I love stories with strong female characters — even if the characters don't realize at first how strong they are. Maybe they've been dumped on, been dealt a raw deal early in life, or simply made some really stupid mistakes. Yet they get up and keep on going. And I also love — love, love, LOVE — stories that are just plain true romances at heart. Don't get me wrong, I love a good meaty plot, but I'm more about the characters and the romance. Guess that would explain some of my favorite books and movies. : )

Here's one that I can (and do) watch over and over: Sweet Home Alabama. How much more romantic could you get? It's a reunion story where the heroine, Melanie, has left her tiny small town to go off to conquer New York (and she's done it, too) and is now ready to move on in her personal life. Only she's still married to her high school sweetheart! Even if you haven't seen the movie, you know where this is going! So, yeah, the plot is simple. Go home and get the divorce. Only it's never that simple, is it? Romance ensues, my heart goes pitter-patter, and I love that in the end, Melanie realizes she doesn't have to prove herself to anyone. Not even to herself. She's made it. She's a success. And there is nothing wrong with where or who she came from. It's like Caught on Camera in that my heroine, Vega, has to figure out that no matter what she's done in the past, it does not define her. She's a great person and deserves to follow her heart, both in love and in her career. *sigh*

Oh! Here's a book that's slightly different, but one that I also love because of both the romance and the fact that the heroine takes crap from no one! It's Jennifer Crusie's Bet Me. I'd have to call this my favorite book ever, and one I reread at least once a year. Min has just been dumped and overhears her ex making a bet with a gorgeous guy that he can't get Min in bed in a month. Do you think she's going to sit by and allow that to happen? Uh … no! But she does need a date for her sister's wedding, so she decides that she can play games with the best of them! Only, in her path to make the men in her life pay, she and Cal fall head over heels for each other. It's merely a matter of spending time together and they realize they want more. I try to do this in Caught on Camera, too. I have Vega following JP with a camera to get the interview she needs for the job she thinks she wants. Therefore, they have to spend a lot of time together. What they find is that they aren't merely wildly attracted to one another, they actually "get" each other. And thus want to help each other be the person they were meant to be. And subsequently fall madly in love. : )

But my most favorite story of all time is the wonderful, Cinderella-esq story of Pretty Woman! Talk about a movie that I can't help but stop and watch any time I see it on TV. I've been in love with this movie since it first came out over 20 years ago. It's simply the most perfect romance. And it reminds me a lot of my own book. Two people who couldn't be more wrong for each other, yet find they aren't as different as they first thought. They each have their own issues to overcome, neither having had the most perfect formative years, and in the end they both grow, willing to go their separate ways, but knowing they don't have to. Just thinking about it makes me want to run straight to my DVD collection! Don't you love a good romance? Vivian in Pretty Woman hasn't had the most upstanding past, and neither has my heroine, Vega. Yet neither were ever bad people. They simply made bad choices. And do I even have to tell you how much I love rich and powerful men? Edward of Pretty Woman is hard and sexy and has no plans to ever bend. Want to guess what JP is like in Caught on Camera? Oh yeah. All that and more! Who doesn't love a hot, powerful, sexy guy? Not me! 
